Ready for Summer Party – June 17
What a great party it was. The weather couldn’t have been better, the food was plentiful and prepared by an expert, the games got the kids bouncing and giggling, but most of all it was our friends and neighbors. Individuals who put it together included Janie DeSpain - Planning and Purchasing, John Scott – Area Preparation, Rosemarie and Gabby Costanzo – Water Balloons, Ana McHale - Photos, and Luis Perez - Chairman.

Kudu of the Month
Our honoree this month is Vince Sicca of Heritage Lakes, the Pitmasters Barbeque chef for the Ready for Summer Party who single handedly prepared and cooked 60 pounds of pulled pork, hundreds of hamburgers and hotdogs and gallons of boiled peanuts. He’d rather have a picture of his pride and joy than one of him so here it is.
Summer Softball
We’ve had nice co-ed turnouts so bring your spouse or girlfriend unless you macho guys are afraid she’ll show you up. We play on Wednesday nights at 6:30 PM at the Recreation Area ball field and have extra mitts, so come even if you don’t have one. Call Steve Nieroda at 259-4476 or email him at nierodas@bellsouth.net.
Architectural Application Fee
At the June 1, 2006 meeting the Board of Directors voted to remove the $25 fee for any architectural application, including those requiring a county permit. It was recognized that the association incurs minimal direct costs for these applications and either the homeowner or the contractor pay the county permit fee.
Mail Boxes
A number of Homeowners have seen they need to either replace or repair their mailboxes and its post. Among the options are:
Replace Mailbox and/or Post: Creative Mailboxes I-800-780-7629 This vendor has installed all posts and mailboxes in Grand Haven.
Repair Post/Mailbox: Paint: 1) Purchase 1 quart black paint with zinc oxide (Richards Paint on Post Rd.)
2) Clean area to be painted with 50/50 water /vinegar mix using a steel brush (Dollar Store). Let dry, then paint. May have to repeat every 2-3 yrs.
Landscape Irrigation Filter Cleaning
Unscrew cover (it should have been only hand tightened), take out filter and place inside cover. Place cover, with the filter inside, in a bucket, pour Clorox or bleach into cover, fill to top. Let set for 15‑20 minutes, rinse cover and filter with hose until clean. Repeat this every 3-4 weeks ...more algae in summer. Insert filter to pump line, screw cover on (hand tighten only), run pump to check water flow. If no water flow, give cover a little more of a turn (air into line will not allow pump to pressurize). NEVER USE A TOOL TO TIGHTEN COVER. WHEN COMPLETE , DILUTE CLOROX IN BUCKET AND POUR ON DRIVEWAY, RINSE WITH HOSE UNTIL TOTALLY DILUTED.
Sago Palms
This palm is one of the more attractive landscape plants in our community. Unfortunately, it’s both expensive and susceptible to Pacific or Oriental Cycad Scale, which has become so prevalent some nurseries have stopped stocking these palms. Rockledge Gardens has given us the following advice. “The best control is to give your sago a close look (including the undersides of the fronds) 2 or 3 times each month. At the first sign of this white scale, spray once a week for 3 to 4 weeks with Organicide or Ultrafine Oil (4 tbsp per gallon water). Both these products are organic and environmentally “friendly”. Once dead, the scales will not fall off the fronds on their own. You will need to either wash them off with your hose or by hand. If the problem is serious, we recommend removing all the fronds. Before taking this drastic measure, we also recommend that you fertilize 2 to 3 weeks before frond removal. Cut the fronds as close as possible to the main trunk and immediately dispose of them (don’t let them fall or lay on the ground.) Finally, mix enough Bayer Rose & Flower Insect Killer (4 tbsp per gallon water) to pour over the sago ‘stump’ and to drench the sago’s root system. Do this weekly for a total of 3 times.”
Removing Rust (Con’t from last newsletter)
Resa Bresser of Heritage Lakes said “’The Works’ removes rust from my PVC fence and house and it’s only $1 at Dollar General”. I found if you spray it on
and rinse it off, it does a great job at both removing the rust and eliminating the need to trim the grass at the base of the fence. Don’t inhale or it could clean your lungs as well as remove the rust.
New HOA Website
The Board is currently redesigning the HOA website to reflect a more modern feel as well as to provide added functionality such as a bulletin board system. This will allow more open communication amongst the community within the different forums as well as provide another means of communication between the board members and residents. To try a test drive, go to: http://www.grandhavenhoa.org/
Playground for Toddlers
The Board is investigating adding a Toddler (2‑ 12 yrs) playground near the Pavilion. Give us your ideas and suggestions.

Fountains
The Board is also looking into putting fountains in one or two ponds. These are for both aesthetics and to keep the algae down.
